What is an ASP?
An ASP–application service provider––refers to a service that manages a software-based solution via the Internet. The solution usually includes the application and all related services: training, support and upgrades. As well, the ASP manages all servers needed to run the solution, and handles all related staffing requirements.
What does an ASP model offer that other solutions don't?
An ASP solution offers a number of advantages over in-house solutions:
| • | Initial investment is minimal and system set-up is fast. | |
| • | Pay-as-you-go fees enable greater payment flexibility. | |
| • | There's no need for special in-house technical expertise. | |
| • | The need for special infrastructure (hardware, supporting applications) is eliminated. | |
| • | An ASP can borrow Internet bandwidth to provide enhanced service scalability. |
The high cost of software, the need for supporting hardware and IT staff, and the overall increasing complexity of technology have made ASP solutions a popular choice for many people–in particular, those within small and medium-sized organizations wanting to benefit from current technology at a reasonable cost.
Why does an ASP solution matter to primary-care physicians?
While a growing number of primary-care physicians are looking to electronic medical record (EMR) solutions to improve practice efficiency and patient service, most physicians–typically operating in practices of one to three people–have neither the resources nor the technical competency to purchase and maintain in-office systems. With an ASP solution, physician practices, regardless of size, can adopt and benefit from leading-edge technology at minimal investment. The solution is flexible and scalable: capacity can be adjusted through a quick phone call to the provider. The solution includes all necessary training and support, as well as important upgrades that address not only advances in technology but also changes in healthcare legislation, practice guidelines, and funding models. Data is secure–redundancy is built-in–and is routinely backed up. In the event of a technical question or concern–day or night–expert help is a keystroke or phone call away.
